Poll: Would You Buy A Ford Mustang Hybrid?By Brett Foote September 23, 2025 5:03 am 20 The Blue Oval first announced that it was developing a Ford Mustang hybrid way back in 2017, investing $700 million in the Flat Rock Assembly plant in Michigan, where the pony car is built, in part to support production of a hybrid V8 model slated to debut in 2020. That obviously never happened, and today, the traditional Ford Mustang lineup is still devoid of any kind of electrified option. However, that may not be the case much longer. As Ford Authority exclusively reported yesterday, sources familiar with the matter have revealed that The Blue Oval currently has an S650 Ford Mustang hybrid model in operation – known internally as S650E. It’s unclear what sort of hybrid powertrain is present in this pony car, as it could be a traditional hybrid or plug-in hybrid. It’s also unclear if this project will ever see the light of day, given the fact that the Trump administration has worked to relax fuel economy and emissions regulations for vehicles as of late. Regardless, S650E prototypes are running around and have entered the Technology Prove-Out stage, meaning there are mules being tested that likely feature some form of electrification. The Blue Oval also previously announced that it planned to add some sort of hybrid powertrain option to every model in the ICE-focused Ford Blue lineup by 2030, and the Mustang just so happens to fall under that umbrella, making such a thing seem likely to happen. CEO Jim Farley has hinted that a Ford Mustang hybrid remains possible on more than one occasion in recent years, too. Otherwise, we don’t yet know much about the S650E Ford Mustang hybrid, including what sort of gas engine it might pair with an electric motor, or two, or more. Regardless, whether it be mated to the turbocharged 2.3L I-4 EcoBoost, 5.0L V8 Coyote, or something else entirely, it stands to reason that a potential model could improve both fuel economy ratings and performance compared to standard ICE offerings, as is usually the case with these types of sporty hybrid vehicles. Thus, we’re curious whether or not pony car fans would actually buy a Ford Mustang hybrid, if such a thing does finally come to fruition in the near future. As Ford Authority reported in July, the new, S650-generation Ford Mustang RTR isn’t currently part of the pony car’s 2026 lineup either, though that could certainly change at any point. However, a new report indicates that this new, performance-focused model will in fact go on sale soon. According to Automotive News, Ford “soon will begin selling an affordable, EcoBoost-powered variant modified by RTR, a company owned by race car driver Vaughn Gittin Jr.” That doesn’t exactly give us much of a timeline to go by, but at this point, we’ve been waiting for months to see the new Ford Mustang RTR completely unveiled, let alone on dealer lots. The aforementioned teaser only showed off what we see here – a vehicle covered in a unique wrap with Hyper Lime Brembo brake calipers and pedestal spoiler. “I’m pumped to have the opportunity to create what we believe is the most exciting turbocharged Mustang ever,” RTR president and founder Gittin, Jr. said at that time. “This Mustang RTR is pure accessible fun, with many enhancements, including Mustang Dark Horse components, Mustang EcoBoost’s near-perfect weight distribution, and RTR’s signature styling, it’s ready for drifting, drag racing, back-road cruising, or ripping around an autocross track. The new Mustang RTR is truly Ready to Rock.” Meanwhile, as Ford Authority previously reported, the S650-generation Mustang is currently scheduled to receive its first mid-cycle refresh in late 2026, with its next redesign on track for 2029. The Blue Oval was originally planning to transition its iconic pony car to all-electric power for its next big redesign, but that’s no longer the case. Rather, the Mustang will remain an ICE-powered model “well into the next decade” according to muliple reports.

As such, we’re seeing more and more carbon fiber present in modern vehicles, whether that be something like the 2025 Ford Mustang GTD or builds from smaller companies like the new AC Cars’ Cobra GT coupe and roadster. Now, the very first carbon fiber widebody 1969 Ford Mustang has debuted, created by the folks at the muscle car restoration shop known as Trick Rides. This new carbon fiber 1969 Ford Mustang – nicknamed “Scorched” – will be built in limited quantities, with 20 examples set to be sold to the public. It was engineered entirely in CAD with 3D scanning technology, and the first example is now set to debut at this year’s SEMA Show in Las Vegas this November. The entire body was crafted from pre-preg carbon fiber, making it unique in that regard, and in this case, is left in its natural state with no paint.

The Blue Oval was tinkering around with the idea of creating a Ford Mustang four door sedan before the pony car even launched in the 1960s, but as most everyone is well aware, such a thing has yet to exist today, six decades after that debut. However, rumors that a Ford Mustang four door is in the works have circulated for years now, and have only intensified as of late. In fact, in August 2024, Ford reportedly showed a number of renderings, mockups, and photos of some future Ford Mustang variants – including a four-door – but it doesn’t seem like a production version is set to arrive anytime soon. Rather, according to a new report from Automotive News, the Ford Mustang four door sedan isn’t expected to enter production until at least 2028, or perhaps even later. That future model could be called the Mach 4 – a term the automaker filed to trademark back in February in the U.S., and around that same time, a number of other global markets, signaling that the family-friendly pony car may be exported to other markets, too.
